To study in India, one will need a student visa that will enable them to travel and live in India until their studies are completed. The visa is granted by the High Commissioner of India at the high commission of India located opposite to Mwalimu Nyerere conference Centre, Posta at the time of writing this article. Also, a student is required to update the student VISA every year at foreign offices (FRRO) located in every city of their university.
The following documents are needed for Student VISA to study in India:
- Admission letter
Admission letter is a letter of acceptance from the university that shows a positive response to invite you to join their academic programs in the respective academic year. Most universities in India include all fees that students will be liable to pay and will indicate if the student is under any type of scholarship or not. Most admission letters from India take 2 to 5 days and are only provided after the admission fee has been paid. - Filled application form
This is a form available at indianvisaonline.gov.in that a student must fill accurately so as to enable the embassy to obtain first hand information from them. This is the most important document when applying for not only a student visa, but any type of visa to study in India. - Visa letter
Some universities provide a different letter called a visa letter but mostly the admission letter is used as the visa letter. - Sponsorship letter
This is a letter written by a student’s sponsor, either be a parent, guardian or anyone liable to pay fees, stating that they are able to sponsor the student for the whole period of their studies in India. - Sponsor Id
The embassy needs to make sure that the sponsor is a real person and will need their id attached during the application processes and anytime the High commissioner wishes, they can call the sponsor for a short interview at the embassy though in very rare scenarios. Sponsor can provide the following ids that are acceptable by the embassy: driving licence, national id, travelling passport or voters id. - Bank statement of sponsor
The sponsorship letter and id should be accompanied by a bank statement to prove that the sponsor can fund the students’ education until they graduate. Names should match on all these sponsor documents and the bank statement should atleast have 2000 usd monthly rotation or 3000 to 6000 usd balance at the time of applying for a visa. - Medical form
This form proves that a student is fit to start their studies in a foreign country. The Indian High commission usually accepts medical forms from government hospitals. - Yellow fever card
This card is provided to individuals after getting the yellow fever vaccination. Most countries including India require students and other individuals to acquire this vaccination before travelling. In Dar es salaam, this vaccine is available at Mnazi Mmoja Hospital and near Ferry. - Valid travelling passport
Students travelling to India require a passport that is valid for at least 5 years or 1 more year equivalent to their study duration in India. Failure to that can hinder a student from getting a passport. - Passport size
A passport size with white background should be attached with the application form before submitting the same to the high commission of India - Former school transcripts & certificates
The embassy needs to know that you are a former student from a certain school and your degree is valid. For that reason only, a student has to attach their former transcripts and certificates when applying for a student visa. - Police clearance
This is the piece of documentation for immigration purposes or for working abroad/ studying abroad. It is always processed by the ministry of internal-affairs that is located in most regions around Tanzania as it costs Tsh 2000 only at the time of writing this magazine.
